If family were easy, we could do it in our own fleshly self-propelled willpower. If we could do it on our own, we would not bear a cross. And if we are not bearing a cross, then what we are doing would not matter in the broad sweep of eternity. Family matters. That’s why it is hard. As the songwriter Rich Mullins once put it, “I can’t see where you’re leading me unless you’ve led me here, where I’m lost enough to let myself be led.” Family will do that, but not with our pride and self-sufficiency
